How Local SEO Works
There are 2 ways to appear on Google:
1. Google Ads. You pay Google to run an ad for you. These appear at the top of the page when you search. These are called Google Ads and basically you bid against competitors a certain amount for your ad to appear on the results page. If a user clicks on your ad, you pay for each click.
2. Organically. Your business appears in the search results organically. This means that Google chooses where to show your website or Google My Business (GMB) profile based on a variety of factors. They could choose to show you on page 1, page 2 and so on. They also determine your placement, whether you will rank number 1 on the first page or number 5 and so on.
Local SEO is focused on organic results
SEO stands for search engine optimization. The purpose of SEO is to understand what factors Google is looking for and then to optimize your website and GMB profile so that Google chooses to rank you higher. Keep in mind, Google’s results are localized and usually you can only rank in the city of your business address. Hence, the term Local SEO.
Unlike Google Ads, where you can pay Google and get instant results, Local SEO takes time. When a farmer plants a seed, he doesn’t expect it to grow by the next morning. It is similar when it comes to ranking on the first page of Google. You plant seeds and the results will come later. Most companies will not see results for at least 3-6 months. It depends on your industry and city.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! Once you are ranking on Google, you will be getting organic leads, from people that have a genuine need for your services. The time spent working on Local SEO is a long term investment for your business.
What are keywords?
Keywords are search terms that users enter on Google. For example “plumber” or “best towing company.” For local searches, many users also search “near me” after their search term, such as “plumber near me.”
In order to be successful with Local SEO, you need to target the right keywords. If you target keywords with a low search volume or you don’t target keywords with a high search volume, it can have a significant impact on your business.
